Air Raid Shelters

Warning of the approaching bombers was given by the air aid sirens. As the sirens made their dreadful waling noise people stopped and quickly took shelter.

The government gave out anderson shelters free to people who earned less than £5 per week .These were small but far more comfortable than the large crowded public shelters.

Night after night the German bombers bombed the city. For 75 out of 76  nights after 1940 London was bombed. Thousands of people living in London sheltered in the underground stations. Mattresses covered the platform and people even step on the escalators.
