Victorian punishment

Victorian jails believe it or were not too bad. To be happy in jail you have to be rich to pay the police. If you are rich you were actually allowed to get people to bring you your food and drink. All prisoners had easy access to alcohol. However there were some bad things about being in jail. There was a machine called the screw which you had to wind around and around all day long and every hour they tighten it to make it even harder to wind around. They all had to wear caps which were pulled over their faces to hide their identity. The only way of identifying them was by looking at their number on their back to find out their name.
