Life as a slave

cast_kirikou

Months after being captured, I found myself on board a slave ship. It wasn’t long before I began to waste away. Darkness surrounded me, so did other children who were in the same pain as me. Was this the normal it is or is it hell?

Daytime fell and the nightmare got worse. It didn’t change for me, it’s always dark. My eyes were stuck open and I felt like crying for my family. What did I do to deserve this? Everyone is screaming their hearts out to get out. I do so miss my family. Why can’t we just go home? We’re all innocent.

The stoop stopped and I was dragged off it onto the quay side. The sun blinded me and I felt I was in a fireplace. The daylight and baby-blue sky made me smile but inside I felt anxious about what would happen to me. What have I done wrong? Looking at my arm, I saw leather-like skin and bone. My eye sight is returning mesmerise all kinds of nature. I see silhouetted monsters and strange things around me, all survived the journey. I hear birds tweeting-like I did in my home land. This nightmare can’t be real.

I have been on the plantation for as many years as I can remember. Separated from my family make my heart melts. If I could choose any wish it would be to see my mum, dad and sister again. The only safe time in my life is night time. I hate working on tobacco! Then I fell into a deep sleep and dreamt about a story of Kirikou…

About a century ago, an intelligent, African boy called Kirikou was born on the inland of Kenya. Kirikou was brave and strong but there was one thing standing in his way.

The evil sorceress, Karaba, was powerful, beautiful and vain and had a massive hatred of children and other men and women. But there was a reason. She had a poisonous thorn in the centre of her back. When Kirikou stole her golden jewellery, she sent a snake down the hole Kirikou dug to try hunt him out.

The fetishes were here slaves, just like minions. Turned men into red-eyed robots, fetishes never let anyone past. If anyone tried to pass and was caught, they’d be turned into stone or slaves.

Kirikou began his adventure by camouflaging as a bird using leaves. Eventually, when Karaba was looking for him, Kirikou jumped from a tree onto her back and pulled out the thorn from her back. The evil vanished and Karaba became kind to all.

Karaba thanked Kirikou and then they kissed. Suddenly, Kirikou transformed into a happy, young man. Kirikou and Karaba were married and enjoyed many years of each other’s love together.

We must remember, this is the story of Kirikou that is still being told today. It also shows that a little brave boy knows what to do and when to do it to bring peace to his homeland, Kenya.
