Rebus

A rebus is a device that uses pictures to represent words or parts of words by their sounds, particular for names of people and places. Up until about 150 years most people could not read or write and most communication were by word of mouth. If you wanted to communicate other than by word of mouth you had to use pictures. This was difficult to do for names, and so a rebus was often used.

Priory 900 years

In 1113 Bridlington priory was found and now in 2013 we are celebrating 900 years. For the celebration they are trying to promote spiritual growth, understanding and hospitality for the community. The life of the community is in its hinterland. To mark its historical background of its region, a team has planned a festival. They hope to continue with the festival for years to come.

Rebus

Only the monks and really wealthy could be educated. If you were not a monk or a wealthy person you would not be educated. Instead they would use pictures to people, places and sounds.

Victorian Police Force

They had whistles instead of radios because they were not invented in the 1840’s.  Victorian Police had to wear uniforms so they were recognised easily. They rode a horse or bicycle.

Victorian punishment

Victorian jails believe it or were not too bad. To be happy in jail you have to be rich to pay the police. If you are rich you were actually allowed to get people to bring you your food and drink. All prisoners had easy access to alcohol. However there were some bad things about being in jail. There was a machine called the screw which you had to wind around and around all day long and every hour they tighten it to make it even harder to wind around. They all had to wear caps which were pulled over their faces to hide their identity. The only way of identifying them was by looking at their number on their back to find out their name.

Victorian punishments

When they are in  jail they have to turn the handle and they  have to keep turning it round all day they have to turn it round 1050 times. and the police come in and tighten  it harder to turn so they have to work harder.

You would get hung for stealing shouting answering back and being rude and you would be up on a chair really high then someone would go behind them and kick the chair so the rope and it would choke you to death.

School punishments

In school   if you were bad you would get caned on your knuckles if you were a boy and if you were a girl you would get wacked on your legs.

Victorian crime and punishment

The Victorian period saw great changes in how people were caught, arrested and charged to appear in court

The punishment in school was very strict. If you started to talk in class you had 30 lashes to your hand with a cane. You got took to court for even stealing onions and in that time it was a very serious crime. Take the case of John Walker he stole 4 onions and got took into prison for seven years.

Victorian Police

Victorian police were more commonly known as peelers in those days. Before walkie talkies were invented they used a whistle to communicate with each other. They used a cutlass and a baton as a weapon (luckily they don’t use a cutlass now!). If you were given a prison sentence (which is most likely in those days) you would be given a punishment to do such as the screw, the still treadmill and the bicycle that only changes the numbers.
